Moms on the Job 7 Secrets for Success at Home and Work

All moms want to feel like successful parents, but feelings of guilt, anxiety, and exhaustion can overwhelm the best intentions of any busy mom. In Moms on the Job, the best skills, talents, and tips of dozens of successful working moms are compiled together in this easy-to-use resource.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Very basic
I think this book would be great for first time working moms or moms just re-entering the work force. Not a lot for those already in the work force for several years. I suppose a couple people who read this could afford a nanny as it suggest as an option–but that’s a hard pill for me to swallow since I’m not rich.

4 Stars Short and helpful
I read this in under an hour and it helped me to have an idea of a workable morning schedule with an infant and a new job. Avoids the at-home mom debate - yay - and the author is a Christian. This is just a “how to handle and schedule your morning, how to work with kids in the picture, and how to balance it all” book. Not overly preachy, but some folks may not like the chapter about prayer.

I liked it, some ideas were obvious, but I did get some good new ideas too.

5 Stars First Aid for Stressed Out Working Moms!
Most busy working moms I know, don’t have time to digest a thick

book telling them how to simplify their family’s life. But, Sabrina’s book is very simple…easy to digest…lightweight!…filled with encouragment(and humor;)and reminds us all that the best tip of all is to begin each and every day with a few minutes with God. As a very busy working mom, I have already seen the benefits from putting some of her tips to work in my life. And, we’ve shared Sabrina’s tips and tools with with many of the women we minister to in the marketplace! Thanks Sabrina!

5 Stars Much More Than a Self-Help Book!
Moms on the Job is much more than basic self-help book. Yes, the author gives us great tips and inspiration, but, as a woman and working mom, I was challenged to make changes. As I read, I found myself assessing my habits, my goals, and my priorities. I was also encouraged to seek help beyond myself— to look to God. And working moms definitely need God. We also need mentors. This book left me feeling as though I’d been positively mentored on mulitiple levels. Good job, Sabrina O’Malone!

What Color Is Your Parachute Workbook How to Create a Picture of Your Ideal Job or Next Career

Yes, this is the best-selling job-hunting book in the world with more than 8 million sold, but this year’s edition is not your father’s “Parachute. The 2005 edition faces squarely the “workquake” that is shaking up the job market around the world and gives not only simple steps but also steady hope.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Some good exercises, but not always helpful
In some parts a too religious perspective, but contains some ok exercises to help you identify your skills and wants, and gives your more insight into the complete picture of your ideal job. Book is mostly about job finding/applying/negotiating tips. Nice illustrations.

4 Stars what color is YOUR parachute?
this book is a great tool to have when looking for a job. it helped me to feel confident at my interviews and to negotiate a great job that i KNEW i wanted.

1 Star What Color is Your Parachute
The book was shipped in a timely manner, however it was in horrible condition. At some point it must have been dropped in the water and the whole book is a mess. Not happy with this. The book was advertised as in good condition.

5 Stars what color is your parachute?
The books and workbooks (I bought 2 of each) arrived in new condition, and timely (within 5 days). Excellent service.

5 Stars Create a compelling vision of the career you want
This book is short, but it will support you in generating a lot of valuable information about your values and a career tailored to fit you. Expect to invest about 20 hours in the self exploration exercises in this book.

You get two products from doing this work:

(1) A baseline self-assessment that you can keep for life and update as it suits your needs.

(2) A compelling, pull-to vision of what you want from your career and life that will operate on you consciously and unconsciously to propel you towards getting exactly what you want.

I used a version of this book in 1992 to create a vision of the career and life that I wanted. Then I put everything away and didn’t look at the work I had done for ten years.

In 2002, I looked at the exercises I had done in 1992. I got goosebumps! Without ever having looked at what I had written again, I had created what I had envisioned ten years previously. Amazing!

As an executive search consultant, I talk daily with people who are in the process of reflecting on their career choices. Because of my own positive experience, this is my favorite print resource, hands down, to share with people who want to generate more self-awareness about their values and a vision of what they want from their careers.

Resume Magic Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer Resume Magic Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer

Filled with “before and after” resume examples that not only teach the author’s special techniques but also show why they work, “Resume Magic” divulges the secrets of better resume writing from an expert with more than a decade of experience producing powerful, effective resumes.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Awesome
I found Resume Magic to be very helpful. I had paid a lot of money for a professsional resume that just wasn’t workig. I tweaked it with tips from this book and had a new job within 2 weeks. The only negative is there is so much information it could be overwhelming if you are starting a resume from scratch and/or have never built a resume.

5 Stars This is a MUST have!
The is quite simply the best book on resume writing I’ve ever read. I’ve worked in HR for over 20 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this. Well worth the money. So far, I’ve used this book to write four resumes for family and friends, all of which have resulted in jobs.

If I could have given this book 7 stars, I would have.

5 Stars Use this book to create a great resume
This book contains many examples of resumes, including before and after examples.

Information on words to use, as well as a grammar refresher, will help you polish the phrases on your resume and avoid tiresome, overused phrases.

There is also a section on cover letters and a section devoted to making your resume visually appealing so that it stands out.

I found tons of useful information in this book, not just platitudes and superficial advice like some resume books dish out.

4 Stars Excellent examples, treats the subject in depth
I checked this book out of the local library, and realized it was worth buying for long-term reference. The thing I like best about the book is the way it speaks to the basic question “Why do I write a resume?” Most treatments just show you how; this one shows you what you’re trying to accomplish with a resume and how best to do that. It has many specific examples, too–so that when you’re finished, you have a document that can accomplish what the resume can accomplish in today’s world of work.

5 Stars Resume magic
This book is phenominal! It is simple to read and has a workable plan to constructing a simple resume that works with your cover letter.

The Chiropractors Self Help Back and Body Book Your Complete Guide to Relieving Aches and Pains at Home and on the Job

The Chiropractors Self Help Back and Body Book Your Complete Guide to Relieving Aches and Pains at Home and on the Job

Most books on backache emphasize medication or surgery as cures. This practical guide suggests a better approach for sufferers. Using self-healing techniques to relieve pain, distinguishing back trouble from other problems, and protecting a weak back during sex or pregnancy are just a few of the topics in this thorough handbook. Over 40 black-and-white illustrations are included.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Almost useless
I did not like this book. It gives only very basic information on how the spine works; the exercises are not properly described and exercise drawbacks are not pointed out. There is a section about nutrition that does not tell you anything really useful.

You might consider buying it only if you are a real novice to this matter.

5 Stars Excellent!
This a wonderful book, and is very reliable in its accuracy. This book can save you some major headaches (no pun intended) down the road. Read it!

1 Star gives me aches to read this
beisdes some exercises and self help sections i found this book to be very dry and thought i was in school to be a Dr, not your average self help book. THis book was too much, and yet somehow not enough

5 Stars Excellent Book.
This is an excellent book to help you fix your back injury if you have been in an auto accident like me. Full of useful tips, and general good advice. It’s one of these self-help books that will help you tremendously dealing with the pain and suffering experienced after a personal injury. I am fond of self-help books, self-help websites and other self-help resources too, and this book is on the top of my list (others like this website http://www.settlementcentral.com) have helped me a lot on the legal side of my personal injury claim too. They even talked about chiropractic care as well as providing demand letters and other stuff useful if you have been in a car accident. This said, this is a book definitively recommended!

5 Stars Sound advice, especially when you are hurting!
Last year I had a back injury that left me immobile for two months. During that time I read four back books to “empower” me with knowledge and tips for recovery. Dr. Homola’s book (now with post-it-notes stuck in numerous chapters) was the most helpful. From helping to determine causes of pain, to outlining simple excercises you can do without buying expensive equipment, this book was the only one I really needed to read. It’s a book I’ll keep on hand as a helpful resource for years to come.

Career Match Connecting Who You Are with What Youll Love to Do

Career Match Connecting Who You Are with What Youll Love to Do

“Career Match” is a one-of-a-kind guide that uses the author’s revealing 10 minute self-assessment to help people discover their ideal work. Featuring in-depth chapters for each personality type, the book shows readers how to find a career that fits their passion and personality, and then shows them how to get it. It is an invaluable resource for those in need of direction, whether they’re seeking a new path or trying to confirm that they’re already on the right one.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars J’s review
The book allows you to reflect on your personality type while also focussing on secondary tendancies, which provide a well-rounded perspective. The job match information is helpful.

5 Stars The best assessment I’ve found, and the easiest!
As a Career Consultant for the past 14 years, I deal with assessment instruments all the time. Shoya Zichy’s “Career Match” is simply the best one I’ve found: it’s the easiest to administer and score (the questions take 10 minutes to answer), the results are unerringly correct, and all the information provided based upon the results is comprehensive and totally useful. Plus, it doesn’t resort to psycho-babble, and it doesn’t need “professional” interpretation, so anyone can pick it up and immediately benefit from it. Cheers to Shoya Zichy and her co-author for putting together a completely enjoyable and marvelously helpful book!

4 Stars Great information
This book has been very helpful to me in 3 ways…

1) understanding some of my own personality traits

2) understanding the traits of those around me, and therefore learning to navigate accordingly.

3) learning positive ways to express some traits (that could be perceived as faults) on my resume or when interviewing.

4 Stars Interesting Book
This was an interesting book, my color matched me pretty well. The only disappointment I had with the book, is that I expected just a little more out of it as far as the job recommendations went. The quiz was easy and fast to take. Then again I am a red/blue so this response was to be expected, or maybe just lucky I left one at all.. lol :)

4 Stars helpful book
I teach a career planning class for 12th graders. I have several books like this in the classroom for reference. Many of the students liked it! It has a very interesting and different way of looking at analyzing your interests and potential careers.

The Adventures of Johnny Bunko The Last Career Guide Youll Ever Need

The Adventures of Johnny Bunko The Last Career Guide Youll Ever Need

“From a New York Times, BusinessWeek, and Washington Post bestselling author comes a first-of-its- kind career guide for a new generation of job seekers. There’s never been a career guide like it.the fully illustrated story (ingeniously told in Manga form) of a young Everyman just out of college who lands his first job. Johnny Bunko is new to parachute company Boggs Corp., and he stumbles through his early days as a working stiff until a crisis prompts him to find a new job. Step by step he builds a career, illustrating as he does the six core lessons of finding, keeping, and flourishing in satisfying work: There is no plan ,Forget about your weaknesses, Persistence trumps talent, It’s not about you ,Make excellent mistakes, Leave an imprintSmart, engaging, and insightful, The Adventures of Johnny Bunko offers practical advice for anyone looking to start a rewarding career.”

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Go, Johhny, Go!
I thoroughly enjoyed both the presentation and substance of this wonderful little book. Pink does a great job of delivering his message within the genre of manga. Well done and balanced. Full of good advice. Delivered in a fun way.

I wouldn’t have picked this book on my own. Yes, I would have judged a book by its cover. I’ve seen other “business” books try to deliver their message in a non-traditional format. Those have failed. This one succeeded. Kudos to a friend of mine who suggested and actively promotes this volume.

This is a serious book full of solid advice and wisdom.

1 Star promising ideas, devisive way to delivery the ideas
My point of view is dissenting compared to many reviews. So I will start by saying that the 6 defining ideas of the book truly are of great value. They include:

1- “There is no plan.”

2- “Think strengths, not weaknesses.”

3- “It’s not about you.”

4- “Persistence trumps talent.”

5- “Make excellent mistakes.”

6- “Leave an imprint.”

All ideas have merit, although not perfect when actually applied.

The problem with the book is the same I have with Pink’s video (and book) “A Whole New Mind.” Within the first few minutes of the video, Pink is telling the audience that parents and educators are doing whatever they can to destroy the life of their children and students by giving terminal career advice. The same attitude is prevalent in “Johnny Bunko.” Pink’s Bob Dylan approach of “don’t trust anyone over 30″ is weak and insulting. This is the delivery I am referring to as being divisive. Note in the book how the 50 something manager is rude, closed-minded, lacks insight and is more of a constraint to the staff than anything else. This is not like any baby boomer I have ever met (I am a Gen-Xer by the way).

Clearly, Pink’s attempt at proclaiming himself a rock star stands in the way of his valuable ideas. And this is unfortunate because principle one has been an important one in my life and I believe in it. In fact I believe in all of them although the career counselor that made the comments about some careers requiring carefully planning, makes an excellent point too.

My advice to Pink is the he consider how he insults those older than Gen Y, as he presents his ideas, which again, are seemingly good ideas.

Thanks for reading. : >

4 Stars Laser sharp advice in a nifty format
It may take me longer to write this review than it did to read all of this book; you can read it nearly as fast as you can turn the pages. (In fact you can read most of it free on the book’s website.) But that shouldn’t diminish the excellent advice contained here, useful for anyone in any job, not just the young people it’s obviously aimed at: focus on your strengths, realize that there is no “plan”, that sort of thing.

One caveat. Don’t look for any deep advice beyond the six central points the book makes. You’ll probably be left thinking “great advice, but what do I do about it.” Perhaps it would be better to think of it as the “first” career guide you’ll ever need, rather than the “last.”

4 Stars One of the best career guides ever
This animated career guide has some of the best advice I’ve ever read in such a condensed, easy to read format. The story line shares six important rules that can not only be applied to one’s career, but to one’s entire life. The only reason it loses a star is because it’s too short; definitely a one-sit read.

5 Stars Fantastic
I was a little skeptical believing a 50 some year old could get anything out of a `comic’ book but I bought it anyway based on the reviews of others.

Although a quick and easy read, I got some life lessons which I will use forever.

Even if you have no plans to change where you are in your life / career, I highly recommend this book.

The Secrets of Economic Indicators Hidden Clues to Future Economic Trends and Investment Opportunities 2nd Edition

“This is the real deal. Baumohl miraculously breathes life into economic indicators and statistics.” –The Wall Street Journal “This is the most up-to-date guide to economic indicators and their importance to financial markets in print. The coverage of less-reported indicators, especially those from nongovernment sources, is hard to find elsewhere. The inclusion of the actual published tables helps the newer student of the markets find the data in the public release. For anyone trying to follow the economic data, this should be next to your computer so that you can understand and find the data on the Internet.” –David Wyss, Chief Economist, Standard and Poor’s “I find Baumohl’s writing fascinating. In addition to the famous indicators, he includes many that I hadn’t heard of. I really appreciate that he tells you exactly where to find each indicator on the Web. Just about anyone who’s serious about understanding which way the economy is headed will want to read this book. It could be a classic.” –Harry Domash, Columnist for MSN Money and Publisher, Winning Investing Newsletter “Bernie Baumohl has accomplished something of real value in The Secrets of Economic Indicators. He has successfully demystified the world of financial and economic news that bombards us in our daily lives. Both professional investors and casual observers of the world of finance and economics will be grateful for what he has done. The constant stream of heretofore bewildering news from the world of business and finance can now be easily understood. Every businessperson or investor should keep a copy of Baumohl’s book close at hand as he or she catches up on the business, stock market, and economic events of the day. It is great, at long last, to have someone who has eliminated what may have been so perplexing to so many and to have done so with such remarkable clarity.” –Hugh Johnson, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Johnson Illington Advisors “Bernie Baumohl has written a must-read educational and reference book that every individual investor will find indispensable for watching, monitoring, and interpreting the markets. The daily flow of high frequency economic indicators is the stuff that makes financial markets move and that can signal the big trends that make or break investor portfolios. Most important, Bernie’s long experience in reporting economics for Time Magazine helps make the ‘dismal science’ lively and interesting. ” –Allen Sinai, President and Chief Global Economist, Decision Economics, Inc. “Baumohl has a gift for taking a complicated subject and allowing it to read like a fast-moving novel. My confidence in reading and understanding economic indicators as portrayed in this book made me realize the possibilities this information holds for improving my personal net worth as well as navigating my business toward higher profits. I recommend this book if you care about your future finances.” –Morris E. Lasky, CEO, Lodging Unlimited, Inc.; Manager and consultant for $6 billion in hotel assets; Chairman, Lodging Conference; Chairman, International Hotel Conference “I think this is an excellent book. It’s well written, accessible to a variety of readers, deals with an interesting and important subject, and covers the topic well. It deserves to get a lot of notice and use.” –D. Quinn Mills, Alfred J. Weatherhead, Jr., Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School “Economic statistics, employment data, Federal Reserve surveys.Think they are boring? Think again! They can drive markets into a frenzy, causing billions of dollars to be made or lost in an instant. Bernie Baumohl brilliantly, clearly, and, yes, entertainingly describes what every investor and business manager should know about economic indicators: which ones move markets, how to interpret them, and how to use them to spot and capitalize on future economic trends. The Secrets of Economic Indicators is an extraordinary and insightful work–an enormously important contribution to the body of financial literature. Read it and then keep it on your desk. User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Eye Opener
This book really made market indicators simple and easy to understand. I appluad the author for his format. If you need to understand all of those fancy indicator lingo this is the book to read.

5 Stars How And Why The Markets Move
Secrets of Economic Indicators is an excellent book on what drives and affects the economy and the markets. From inflation, consumer spending, unemployment, housing, to the Federal Reserve. Each section explains market sensitivity and why. Would not recommend this book for market-timing necessarily but to understand why the markets go up and down. The last 2 chapter have websites for U.S. and International Economic Indicators for further information. Well done.

4 Stars Great guide to economic indicators
This is an esaly introduction to economic indicators, mainly the american ones. It contains some interesting tips about indicators, like “thumb rules” in some cases. It briefly introduces each of the most important indicators to the US economy (as well to other major economies) and it’s effects on the markets. Those interested in detailed information of some indicator will need to go deeper looking for it’s original sources.

5 Stars Excellent book
Very good book to get an idea about all the economic indicators that can make or break the economy.

5 Stars Excellent Reference on Economic Indicators
This book does a great job of explaining a long list of macro-economic indicators, their application and relative predictive importance. Highly recommended for those who want to understand how economists measure and attempt to forecast the direction of economies around the world.

Everyday Etiquette Practical Advice for Social Situations at Home and on the Job Emily Posts Essentials

The signature of good taste.

From silverware to thank-you notes, replying to invitations to sending e-mail, inviting the boss to lunch to making a condolence call, here is the essential guide you need to handle all everyday social situations with ease. In question-and-answer format, etiquette expert Peggy Post provides up-to-the-minute advice fore a range of situations at home and on the job, including:

  • telephone and computer manners

  • tipping

  • table settings

  • introductions

  • appropriate dress for weddings

  • gift-giving

  • religious services

  • and much more

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Odd for a manners book to be offensive, but it is.
Ms. Post’s book is downright offensive in its discussion of children.

For example, Ms. Post takes for granted that children (and not adults) must rise when adults (and not children) enter a room. In certain circumstances, anyone should rise on anyone’s entrance, in other situations only if the person or his office warrants unusual respect, and I had hoped to find in this book guidance on distinguishing one from the other. Instead, I got what I can explain only by attributing to Ms. Post the prejudice that every adult is ipso facto morally superior to any child. If she came by that view honestly, she must have been peculiarly blest in the adults she’s encountered–and peculiarly cursed in the children.

3 Stars Nice compact book, but nothing special
Solid book with the basics of etiquette for various situations. But I didn’t find this book special or with anything that stood out as especially useful. Nevertheless, a nice compact guide.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Are You “Tuned In” to Your Business Opportunities?
I was lucky enough to be given a preview copy of a great new book by Craig Stull, Phil Myers, and David Meerman Scott called Tuned In. I got the preview, but it is being published today. It was a very interesting experience to read this book, because I feel as though I understand the authors’ perspectives so well already. But even though I know where the authors are coming from, I was still riveted by this book. They tell so many great stories that illustrate their big point, which is that you need to be willing to listen to what’s going on around you to really produce a business breakthrough. I found myself sorry when the book ended, because the stories are so helpful in driving the philosophy home, and each story is interesting on its own merits.

I am a big fan of David’s, and if you read his last book, you would be too. So, I recognized David’s voice in places throughout the book, especially when it explains how to detect the difference between tuned-in and tuned-out marketing.

But I also recognize the voices of Craig and Phil, because I am a certified product manager from their company, Pragmatic Marketing. So when the book differentiates between listening to your customers and listening to your overall market, I hear them. When they tell you that you need to get out and talk to people to identify the ideas that will resonate, I remember hearing in class: “Nothing good ever happens in the office.”

So, nothing this book said really surprised me. And that’s the real genius of the book. So often, a really great book says something that seems completely obvious–right after you hear it. This book is one of those.

Well of course you need to talk to your whole market and not just your existing customers. Well sure you’d rather have real information on which to base your decisions than “gut feel.” Certainly innovation for innovation’s sake is doomed to failure.

There are these kind of “Well, duh!” ideas on every page. But they are obvious only in retrospect. Most companies don’t act as if these ideas are obvious–just the opposite.

In my last book, I tried to help people take these approaches in Internet marketing. This book has a bigger agenda, where the authors help you see how to succeed in all the parts of an offering, from product development to marketing. And they succeed, both because of these blowhard-skewering truths and because they have a rich set of stories that put these ideas in action.

I was fascinated by the case study for Zipcar, a business I was aware of but had never tried. The way they first identified the needs of city dwellers who occasionally need a car, but don’t need the hassles of owning one, was an eye-opener for me. But I was even more surprised to hear about how they’ve targeted other groups to help them, ranging from politicians interested in telling a green story to landlords looking to add Zipcars as a differentiator against other rental properties.

Zipcar is just one of dozens of stories that bring the Tuned In principles to life. If you’ve ever wondered why your company is stultified in its strategy, and why it strangles every successful product idea before it ever sees the light of day, read this book. It will challenge you to transform your company or leave it.

4 Stars The Universal Rule
Great Book!! Your own personal opinion is irrelevant no matter what situation you are in. You can accomplish more than you’ve ever imagined in your personal and professional life by observing and listening to others and what they want. And whether it’s right or wrong, let it go. Just give them what they want and the paybacks will come. This book is another great spin on the principles of Dale Carnegie.

5 Stars A Book for Every Marketer
This book is a must read for all entrepreneurs and their marketing department. If you’re lucky enough to read this book before developing your business plan, you’re going to benefit greatly. This book really helped our team dig at how we were developing and marketing our application and our business.

The examples of the book are unique and interesting, supporting the entire premise. Perhaps the best feature of the book is that it can easily be used as a checklist for your company, your product or your service. This book must be purchased by you and must be read by your staff.

5 Stars It’s all about “connections”
This straight-talking book is a great addition to any entrepreneur’s bookshelf. When positioning a company or a product - or a candidate for public office, there are several rules to follow, among them: Who is your customer? What is important to your customer? And how does your service or product meet the “perceived” needs of your customer? The key words are “perceived needs.” You must know what your customer is buying and why, and what they want to buy. You also need to know what they are not buying - and why. It’s all about establishing authentic connections, or as Myers, Stull and Scott say, how we tell our buyer that we’ve solved their problems - so that they listen to what we have to say, buy our products or services, or vote for us. 5 Stars Excellent introduction/summary for Pragmatic Marketing Principles
I’ve been through the seminars on Practical Product Management delivered through the authors’ firm (Pragmatic Marketing). As a CTO it was an eye-opener to see an approach to Product Management that meshed with the concepts of Agile Development in the software field. The two disciplines work well together to create software products that resonate with customers.

This book is not so much breaking new ground, but distilling years of learning into a simple introductory form for folks who might be interested in moving from an inside-out/command-and-control view of the market. It makes a strong empirical business case for doing things differently.

Highly recommended if you’re starting a business, launching a new business unit or product line, or simple want to spark growth in existing efforts. You might even learn which existing efforts are not tuned-in and pull back on their funding so you can invest in products and services that the market wants.
