I recently decided that when i graduate from high school next year I would like to persue a career in Journalism in some form, I love to write. I plan on attending a four year university. UNC is one of my favorites, but i would like some ideas as to what different careers are like.

i just got a BA in communications with a concentration in journalism. i can’t even find a decent job. I wanted to work for a major magazine like People or Time, but alot of those places are free lance and don’t hire full time unless you have, once again, HANDS ON experience — if you are near a big city or willing to move to one would be the best bet. i love to write, it’s the only thing I do well but this career doesn’t pay, as well as I thought like a MBA degree or Law degree. i mean unless u wanna teach (which I don’t). if you are willing to take a LOW salary and work your way up through it then jour. is worth it. I’m going to get my MA not sure in what yet (but not in jour.) cuz that I also hear is a waste unless u have HANDS on experience in the biz to co exist with the MA degree. my best advice to you is this: get your BA in journalism – a few are going to advise you not to, but do it especially if you’re like me and that’s all you’re really good at is writing. while in college get at least 2-3 INTERNSHIPS. this is going to show you what the world of jour. is really like, it’s alot different then reading about it in textbooks! jobs look at your internships – trust me it is important. that is my biggest regret at college, that only did one internship. i’ve now branched out and think i want to write for news instead of just magazine. so that is an option for you to. Teaching is also an option, there is photojournalism, technical writing, there is a lot of options. explore them all and make them work for you….. Don’t limit yourself to just journalism explore other communications as a whole majors and how you can use your BA in jour. to work in them. Look at English, Science, History, etc. they all need writers.
