Writing Home by Cindy LaFerle is a wonderful book filled with short stories of everyday life. Cindy can take an ordinary event (shopping, meeting friends, gardening) and tell about it from a unique point of view. I love reading about the way she looks at everyday things. It makes you reflect and realize that everyday things are not to be taken for granted. My 15 year old daughter picked up Writing Home and started reading some of the stories. I heard her laugh out loud as she related to the funny tales that only Cindy LaFerle can spin.

Cindy La Ferle lives in the world that most of us do. She is married, raising a family, keeping a career and involved in her community. She observes our world and writes from a perspective, not authoritative, but as one sharing the journey with her reader. Her essays are poignant and concise; each one a perfect jewel.

This is a wonderful book full of Cindy LaFerle’s original, funny, empathetic voice. In the interest of full disclosure: I first came to Cindy’s writing when she submitted something to Literary Mama and I was the Creative Nonfiction Editor there. Ever since I’ve been hooked and now we’ve become cyber writer friends. Anyone interested in home and family life should buy this book! It also makes a great gift for friends.

Anything Cindy Laferle writes will predictably bring you home to what matters most: living gently, simply, with an open mind, a loving heart, and greater appreciation for life. Cindy’s words have never failed to inspire me. In fact, on more occasions than I can name, her words have brought me to grateful tears. Her reflections on home, family, and parenting, especially, deeply touch the heart. This collection of essays will fast become one of your favorites. It is one of mine. It makes a wonderful gift book as well.

This book of domestic essays by Michigan journalist Cindy LaFerle is a major delight. The rich topic of LaFerle’s family life, from delivering newspapers on dark Sunday mornings with her son to remodeling her historic home and baking bread for peace, is comfort food without the calories. The essays pair especially well with a warm cup of tea on a cold afternoon. LaFerle’s calm and compassionate humor will remind readers to be grateful for the many blessings of home.
